You picked a great option with Dental Implants! They are a great way to rejuvenate your smile and give you long lasting results. At Reimels Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we have worked together to provide you with the information below to help clarify the proper care of your dental implants to keep your oral health on track moving forward.

The first 48 hours after dental implant placement is the most rigorous timeframe to stay on top of your implant aftercare required for your new teeth. Make sure to keep your gauze in place throughout these 2 days, replacing it with fresh gauze every 30-45 minutes to make sure the material stays fresh. Make sure you do not disturb the surgical area, brushing your teeth very gently the night of surgery and rinsing with salt water 2-3 times a day 24 hours after the procedure.

Over time, food and bacteria can start to build up and get stuck in the areas near the implant leading to the formation of plaque. You need to take care of your dental implants daily to prevent this plaque from becoming an infection. Your implant aftercare should be performed just as you would treat your real teeth, including your daily cleaning routine.

Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush every morning and night. It is also recommended to brush after any sugary drink or food. However, brushing is not enough to fight off plaque build up. Flossing is a great way to remove the build up between each of your dental implants and keep your teeth in pristine condition. Be sure to ask your dentist which floss is best to use for your implants! Any member of our team would be more than happy to help you plan a more specific cleaning and care routine to maintain healthy teeth and gums after your procedure.

You must continue to come in for your regular visits with our dentists to have your implants professionally cleaned! During the first few months, you will visit very frequently as you adjust to the new implants. However, this will change once you are well adapted. Implants will only require a dental check up every six months moving forward, when you come in for your regular cleaning just as you have your entire life!

If you have any further questions about proper dental implant aftercare, call us at 704-948-1111 and a member of our team will be happy to discuss the treatment with you further! You can also book an appointment with our easy online scheduler and just let us know in the notes that you are hoping for an implant consultation.
